My son has strep where?

My son has strep in his anus! Whoa! What? I didn’t even know you could get it there.

Apparently, you can get strep just about anywhere and its more common than you realize. In fact, many of the anal infections get misdiagnosed as a yeast infection or diaper rash.

So how did my son get it? Well, you get it when you have strep on your hands (like from boogers or saliva from a sneeze) and then you touch your bottom. I can honestly say I never thought to wash my hands BEFORE assisting my older son in the bathroom. The other possibility was that he’s been a carrier of strep (most people have strep virus on their bodies but are able to stave off infection because they are healthy) and he got a common cold virus which weakened his immune system and thus the strep bacteria had the perfect environment to thrive (warm body, weakened immune system so not so many antibodies flowing through the system). It apparently happens frequently but goes unnoticed.

How did we notice? Well, for awhile now my son would occasionally complain that his butt (inside) was itchy. We assumed he wasn’t wiping that well. So we had started wiping his butt for him again. Yet, he would still complain periodically about his itchy butt. He also would get little bumps on his butt. He wears a diaper at night time so we thought it was just diaper rash. In fact, we had gone to the doctor before (different one than from today) and he had looked at it and said it was probably just diaper rash, too.

A few weeks ago, my boygs got sick – typical virus style sick – fever, sleepy, etc. After the fever went down he had the runny nose thing going on. Of course, our youngest son came down with the same exact symptoms 3-4 days later as is typical of a virus. Nothing out of the ordinary for flu season.

However, the runny nose has persisted. Both boys continued to have runny noses and the younger one seemed to be drooling a lot more. The older one would complain of his ear hurting sometimes. The younger would sometimes get a goopy eye for a little while. Their symptoms seemed to come and go. I’d think they were getting better, then they’d seem sick all over again.

Earlier this week, I was diagnosed with strep throat (I had a horrific weekend and there was no doubt that it was strep). While talking with one of Max’s therapists, she told me about how she had gotten a strep infection on her arm once. That was the first I had ever heard of strep anywhere other than the throat. I’ve had a LOT of strep infections in my life and was totally shocked to learn this.

Anyways, my husband has been sick right along with me but he had his tonsils removed when he was a kid so I didn’t know what strep looked like without tonsils. So this morning I was doing a search to find out what the symptoms were and an article had come up “Why Your Kid May Have Strep and You Don’t Know It.” And I had one of those “Aha” moments. I Knew without a doubt that Milan had peri-anal strep. I did a quick search and sure enough the images matched his rash on his butt and the symptoms were the same.

I also knew that our younger one had it, too. Because just the day before I had noticed one of those bumps on his butt just like his big brothers.

So I made an appointment to see the doctor this morning and she confirmed it. Both boys had strep butt!

In all of the many, many times I had researched my son’s butt rash, not once had strep ever come up in the search. We’ve dealt with our fair share of viruses, rashes and other typical childhood illnesses. I never once heard about strep in the peri-anal area. Well, that’s not exactly true. I do remember getting tested for it when I was pregnant. I remember the nurses telling me its actually quite common for women to have strep in the vagina or butt areas and that its important to treat it before they give birth.

As weird as all this is. And as cringe worthy as it all is. I felt it is VERY important for me to write this article. Who knows. There might be another mom out there searching for information about the “rash on toddler butt” just like I was and maybe this article will help.

Thanks for posting this article. It helped me figure out that my kid had strep in his butt. I’ve had it 4 times this year and my husband twice, and we just couldn’t figure out what was causing it. Well this past week I was positive again and had to drag myself into the Dr. for another antibiotic prescription. Meanwhile my 4 year old had been up at night screaming that his butt hurt. We though he was just having constipation or was being dramatic or something. But a red rash appeared on his butt and then I started googling. He tested positive this morning and thankfully his pediatrician prescribed meds for our entire family to stop strep in its tracks once and for all! ๐Ÿ™‚

Just figured this out. I wet to mayo clinic websites for common reasons children have an itchy butt but bacterial infection never came up as a common one. I thought it was yeast or pin worm. Anyway, only one day of antibiotics and it’s clearing up. The little white bumps around the main rash where the first sign of bacterial infection. The red itchy area looked just like yeast. Poor kid had 2 weeks of me treating him with anti-fungal medicine.

After reading this article I felt like you had been living in my house the last week!!! My son had word for word exact some symptoms…rash on butt, butt itchiness (I assumed he wasn’t wiping well either), flu symptoms. Could not figure it out. He was sent home sick from school with low grade fever and vomitring the nurse said there was a case of strep and suggested to get the test. Boom test confirmed strep! Thank you for writing this so now I know other moms have googled “rash on butt”

My son has this I’m sure. We are going to the dr tomorrow. He has a red round spot around his anus and blood streaked poop and now a sand paper like rash all over his body. Poor baby. I’ve been using Monistat to no avail.

Yep! Took my four year old twin boys to the ped’s office yesterday after work b/c both had been complaining that their “tushy tickled — where the poops come out”. They had been saying it for over a week….and I assumed it was some sort of diaper rash from not wiping properly after using the potty. I put diaper cream on them, but the itchiness and tickles didn’t go away. Yesterday morning, one twin’s butt looked pretty bad and I knew it was time to go to the ped’s office. First thing the ped did was look at their butts and swab them…..and told me that strep can present in the butt and the common complaints are itchiness and rash. Fifteen minutes later, it was confirmed by their on-site lab: Butt strep for both boys! They are both on amoxicillin (sp?) now. After reading a few articles on the internet this am, I feel so LUCKY/HAPPY that my ped’s office recognized it right away!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ We need to share our experiences with our girlfriends, Ladies! Don’t be embarrassed about it! Get the word out that strep can show up anywhere — even in private parts!

We just found out my daughter has this and we just thought it was from not wiping. Thank you

  11. I have nwver in my 21 years being in the nursing field ever heard of this. This evening my daughter once again complained of her butt hurting afyer pooping. I k ow it is clean becauae i wipe it. I called my work and decided to take her to the ER, thinking thus was nothing. Well after the Dr. Looked at her bum she said my daughyer had rwctal strep. I about fell off my chair. I have nwver heard of that. I feel so bad, because this has gone on for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Sometimes it would hurt and others nothing. My poor baby girl. I feel ashamed of myself. Will never take anything lightly again.

    Thanks for thus article.

Excellent post. I just went through the same thing with my 4 yr old. Started with pinworm scare, got the pinworm treatment for the whole family, including 24/7 whole house cleaning…I’m still tired from it all.well the red circle on his bottom remained.for 5 days after the pinworm medication. And the red spots(pimple like) came back and I just knew it was strep.i. I ve been increasing garlic, apple cider winegar and De…limited sugar and dairy and it was getting better.but still the red circles we went to the urgent care both got tested for strep, mine were negative and his “screaming positive”, as the pa put it. He was about to give him antifungal creme, but I insisted he tested us. He came back and said ” you made me a better provider today “. Said “I learned a big lesson today and thank you for that…. confirmation and solution at last. Even though I’m anti antibiotics, we will all take it just so we aren’t spreading it back and forth…thx again for sharing…

I just found out my 2.5 year old son has strep butt. He’s had diarrhea off and on for 2 weeks. His twin has been throwing up every day for 2 weeks too. They have t tested him yet but I’m collecting poop to have tested on both boys.
So tonight everything was fine and then both boys used the potty we have in the living room. Strep butt son had diarrhea and started screaming like I’ve never heard him before. I cleaned his butt and put cjs butter on his butt. It was a little red around the butthole but not nearly as bad as some of the rashes they’ve had before. He screamed for an hour and I called to get him in to the dr at the office open till 9 pm. They did a swab and he has strep butt. It must be so painful. My son is miserable. He can’t even walk without looking like a crab . He just keeps screaming that his butt hurts.
