I am one of those stupid parents that left their child in the car

Yes, you read the title right. I left my newborn son in the car. What kind of stupid mom am I? I must be a really bad parent, right? I don’t think so. Most people who know me know how much I love, adore, respect and cherish my children. So how could I leave my son in the car?

It happened easier than you think.

I was on my way to pick my older son up from school. And as most new parents do, I was constantly checking in the rear view mirror to see my baby sleeping peacefully in the back seat. Every time I looked at him, my heart melted (still does).

Just as I got to school and was parking the car, I finally got a return phone call from his doctor. We had been playing phone tag and I really needed to make an appointment for him. So I answered the phone and parked the car while talking to my baby’s doctor.
So much of what we do in life is just habit. Without even thinking about it, I parallel parked my car into a spot, put the car in park, rolled the windows up, unlatched my seat belt, swung my legs over, exited the car, turned back to press the door lock and shut the door. All while managing to look at my calendar to see what dates I had available.

After finalizing the time and date, I ended the call and continued walking into my son’s preschool. He was so excited to see me, but ran back to continue playing with his friend that was still there. I started chatting with the other mom like we did every day. After a few minutes, my older son walked up to me and asked me where the baby was.

My heart sank!

I had left him in the car!

In a blink of an eye, I ran out of that school (leaving my older son just standing there) and ran straight to the car. My baby was still sleeping. When I opened the door, the car had already started to get really hot. When I pulled my baby out he was sweating like crazy.

Then the tears started rolling.

He was ok. The other mom tried her best to comfort me. But I was distraught. I had LEFT my SON in the CAR!  I had become one of those “stupid” parents that left their child. I was sooooooo lucky!

The biggest reason I am so lucky is because I realize that it can happen to anyone. I NEVER in a million years thought that I could be one of those parents that could leave their kid. Seriously, what kind of parent leaves their child in a broiling car?

Turns out, a kind, loving, devoted mother can leave their child in a broiling car.

Next time you read or see a story about how a parent left their child, before you start judging them, take a moment to realize that the parent has lost their child from something they did. Could you even imagine the guilt you would feel? Can you imagine how their spouse feels? My heart goes out to every family that has had to deal with this kind of tragedy.

More importantly realize that it could happen to you. To help prevent it from happening here are some really good tips from kidsandcars.org:

  • Put something you’ll need like your cell phone, handbag, employee ID or brief case, etc., on the floor
    board in the back seat.
  • Get in the habit of always opening the back door of your vehicle every time you reach your destination
to make sure no child has been left behind. This will soon become a habit. We call this the “Look
    Before You Lock” campaign.
  • Keep a large stuffed animal in the child’s car seat when it’s not occupied. When the child is placed in
the seat, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat. It’s a visual reminder that anytime the
stuffed animal is up front you know the child is in the back seat in a child safety seat.

It is true about habits. The more you do something, the more it will become second nature. I now look in the rear view mirror and check both car seats every time I get out of the car… even when I run to the grocery store by myself.

4 year old birthday party – how much is too much?

My son LOVES birthday parties. He LOVES the little tchotchkes he gets. God forbid I actually try to throw one of them away – he has actually gone digging in the trash when I have told him I threw some away. He still brings up this crappy little magnifying glass that I threw away. He more or less likes the cake/cup cakes – even if he doesn’t eat it, he still wants it.

But more importantly, my son has been planning his birthday party for nearly 3 months. Yes 3 months! He has not wavered in his idea. The same thing happened last year. Although he actually started planning it in January!

I feel a little guilty because we are spending much more money than we probably should. But I know how much he is going to love it. Granted he probably would be happy with just a few friends but he personally picked out his (quite lengthy) guest list. I have tried to convince him of different options for a birthday party but NO, he wants his big old space party at the park.

So that’s what we are doing. To be honest, I really don’t mind.

Before having kids, we used to live in this funky old guest house with amazing neighbors so we threw parties all the time. We easily spent a couple hundred dollars (mostly on booze) when we were entertaining our friends. I really miss those parties. One good thing about this party, I get to see some of my friends that I wouldn’t normally get to see. This party might be for my son, but its as much for my husband and me.

In the end, it is probably going to cost us as much as if we gone to one of those bounce houses or indoor playgrounds. But that’s not what he wants.

Will he ever remember this? Maybe not, but he STILL talks about his Pirate party from last year. So chances are he will. And even if he doesn’t, I WILL remember the big ole’ smile on his face as he plays with his friends dressed up like an astronaut. And I WILL get to catch up with some of my friends and get to see their kids.

Too much for a 4 year old?? Maybe, but we’re still going to do it and have a grand ole time while we’re at it.

Girl birth announcements still make me a little sad

Back when we found out we were having another boy, I wrote about how I was feeling. 98% of the time I am totally happy that I have two boys. Seriously, there are so many amazing things about being the mom of two boys that I would not get to experience if I hadn’t had them. And if you met my boys, you’d know why I’m totally in love with them.

But every once in awhile, I see/read/hear about someone who is having a girl and I still get a little pit in my stomach. I still miss the girl I never got to meet… you know, the one that I’ve dreamed about ever since I was a little girl. And before you ask, NO, we are not going for number 3. Although, we have kicked around the idea of adopting a girl … later, much later.

Its like I’m grieving over someone I never knew.  It really is a strange feeling to feel like you’re missing someone in your life when you’re so happy with what you have.

Britax Free Ride Event 2013

Its that time of year again when Britax has their awesome Free Ride event. When you buy a Britax B-Ready Stroller you can get either the car seat or the second seat for FREE!
This is such an awesome deal.
If you haven’t already figured out, I LOVE my B-Ready. By far the best purchase I have made since having my second son. If it had been available when my older son was born, I would’ve bought it and gotten the car seat for free. Then when Max came along, all I would’ve needed was the second seat!
Over a year later and I can honestly say both boys do really well in it. A lot of people have commented on why anyone would want to sit in the bottom, but to be honest, sometimes when my older son is tired he prefers to sit down there. He has taken more than one nap on the bottom while we’ve been out and about. Normally when we go on walks, the big boy goes up top facing out and I put the baby on the bottom with the car seat since the car seat can face outwards. That’s definitely my preferred method. Although, the baby does like sitting in the bottom with the second seat facing forward.
However, the majority of the time I use it like a Snap and Go with just the stroller frame and the baby car seat. Although, those days are going to be done soon since the baby is not such a baby any more and has almost outgrown is infant car seat.
This isn’t a compact stroller but it is by far the most versatile. In a a year or so, I’m going to get the Valco Baby Hitch Hiker Ride On Board, Black so that the older one can ride along in the back when he gets tired.
If you’ve been thinking about it, now is a great time to finally go and get it!

My first eBates check came today

I’m usually quite skeptical of online “join this and you’ll get that” kinds of things, but eBates came recommended by someone that I trusted. Well, I’m glad I signed up.

Got my first check today it wasn’t much because I only ordered a museum membership off of Living Social and some toner from Office Max, but its enough to get my favorite coffee from Coffee Bean. The coolest part is that I also got a $10 gift certificate from Target!

If you haven’t signed up but have been wondering about it, click here and start getting some ebate checks!

Buggypod Smorph 2 – Side car for a single stroller

I just came across the Buggy pod Smorph Buggy Sidecar for Strollers and I have to say, its pretty darn cool. I’m still completely in love with my Britax B-Ready Stroller, but I would’ve gotten this when Max was first born while I was saving up the money to get the Britax.

I have not used this side car, I just think its pretty cool.

Buy gently used items for your newborn

I’ve always been a big proponent of reusing as many things as possible, long before it was cool (although I did take an intermission in my late 20’s when I was addicted to shopping). Unless you have a lot of money to spend on all organic things, buying resale is really the best solution so that you can provide a safe, non-toxic environment for your little one.

Healthy child just released a really cool infographic depicting some of the hidden dangers for toxins in your newborn’s nursery.

We literally got everything used because I was so paranoid when my first son was born (we had the same things for my second son). The only things we bought new were the car seat & the stroller. If we had a little more money, I would’ve bought him a REALLY good organic mattress, but that wasn’t in our budget (even buying everything used, it all adds up). They don’t mention in the infographic about clothing, but lots of clothing has chemicals and fire-retardants on them that take a very long time to wash off. We only got new clothing from friends and family as gifts and I did buy 1 outfit, otherwise we asked everyone we knew for used clothes. Also, once you realize how quickly they outgrow them, it really is such a waste to buy all new clothes. Added bonus: when you have used clothes, you don’t care if the baby spits up or has a blow out in them!

The BEST diaper rash ointment

My poor baby has had some seriously bad luck when it comes to getting stomach viruses. Needless to say having a good diaper rash cream has been essential in this household. I’ve tried them all – Boudreaux’s, Desitin, Aveeno, etc. I’ve tried all kinds of oils – coconut (which is my favorite for mild diaper rash), olive, peanut, etc. etc. etc.

Sadly, there were a couple of occasions when nothing was helping. I was talking to one of the other mom’s at my older son’s school and she said she found some stuff that people use on cows but she couldn’t remember the name. A big ole bell went off in my head – she was talking about Bag Balm! How could I have forgotten about it? It was the only stuff that healed my cracked, bleeding skin when I was on Accutane.

Bag Balm

My husband was very skeptical about it but after just one use we couldn’t believe how well it worked (well, actually I could – I’m telling you this stuff does miracles on wrecked skin). It was developed to heal the udders on cows that were sore from milking.

The only gripe I have with it is that its not good for cloth diapering, but with some diaper liners  and stripping of the diapers it is manageable. Actually, I use old t-shirts that I was going to use for rags and cut them into diaper liners. I either toss them in the laundry with my other rags or just toss them in the trash.
